Several layered materials, with only weak van der Waals forces between the layers can be produced in mono- or few layer form via exfoliation or special growth techniques. The best known is graphene but other include transition metal dichalcogenides (Mo,W)(S,Se,Te)2. We study effects of spin-orbit coupling, strain, electric field, electron-phonon coupling and doping charge effects on their band structures.
Another interesting layered material is V2O5 or vanadium pentoxide. It has chains inside the layers and thereby 1D as well as 2D aspects. Because of the occurrence of a narrow split-off dxy band it also has strong correlation effects. We have studied the monolayer effects on phonons and on the electronic band structure and are currently studying the effects of doping.
