Case Western Reserve University Department of Physics
Research Experiences for Undergraduates
Summer 2009
General Information

Welcome to the Case Western Reserve University (Case) Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) website. This is a new program funded by the National Science Foundation Division of Materials Research with additional support from Case. Pending the availability of funding, the program will support a research program for eight to ten undergraduates from outside Case. Each student will be mentored by a physics faculty member on an individual research project designed especially for an undergraduate. In addition to being engaged in individual research, REU students will participate in weekly discussion meetings, professional skills development workshops, a workshop on ethical issues in science, an end-of-the-summer poster symposium, and other professional and social networking activities for undergraduate summer researchers.

The ten-week research program begins June 1 and ends August 7. Each participating REU student will receive a $4000 stipend, free on-campus housing, $800 support for meals, and up to $500 reimbursement of travel expenses.

All students majoring in physics or a related field and interested in experiencing the research environment in the Case Department of Physics are encouraged to apply. Students from institutions that have limited research opportunities and students from groups traditionally underrepresented in science and engineering are especially encouraged to apply. Participants must be citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.

The application deadline is April 26. Applicants will be notified of their status by May 1.
