Cosmology
Cosmology is the study of the origin and evolution of the Universe on its largest scales. It brings together theoretical and experimental results from astronomy, astrophysics, particle physics, general relativity, and condensed matter physics.
The bright spot at the bottom of this picture is due to an exploding star, a so-called Type 1a supernovae. Such objects are as bright as an entire galaxy during their explosion, and can be seen at the far ends of the visible universe. Observations of Type 1a supernovae are helping us to unravel the nature of our expanding Universe.
