The effort to connect microphysics and macrophysics in order to
better understand the origin and evolution of the Universe on its
largest scales, and to probe the nature of the forces that govern
its behavior on fundamental scales.
The nature and properties of large collections of interacting atoms
are studied. Problems range from exotic quantum phenomena at low
temperature to the behavior of everyday materials: liquids, solids,
and gases and everything in between.
We study the fundamental physics of the interaction between light and
matter and investigate the applications of new materials to the
burgeoning photonics industry.
