In this introductory lecture I will present why we have
built the LHC, and discuss the underlying physics of a hadron
collider. This includes the fundamentals of QCD (the theory for the
strong interaction), features such as jets and hadronization, and an
introduction to the physics of the Standard Model, including
Electroweak symmetry breaking. The lecture will be concluded with a
discussion about the problems with the Standard Model.
