========================================================================== FIRST BULLETIN 28 April 2003 ========================================================================== THE KAVLI-CERCA CONFERENCE ON THE FUTURE OF COSMOLOGY Case Western Reserve University Cleveland, Ohio USA October 10-12, 2003 Web Site: http://www.phys.cwru.edu/events/cosmol03.php Email Contact for Conference Secretariat: cerca@cwru.edu ========================================================================== OVERVIEW: This conference will provide a forum to critically examine key questions facing cosmology, particle physics, and astrophysics in the next 25 years. Questions we will explore include: - What are the best tools to push the frontiers of astrophysics and cosmology? - How much more information can be gleaned from the CMB? - Can we detect cosmic neutrinos and gravitational waves? - How can we determine the nature and evolution of dark energy? - What are the prospects for solving the cosmological constant problem? - What are the prospects for the detection of extra dimensions? - How can we best learn about the topology of the universe? - What is the dark matter and how can we best measure its properties? - How can we test inflationary models? - What are the prospects for explaining baryogenesis? - How can we explain large scale structure at all scales? - What are the prospects for new particle physics discoveries? - What can we say about the long-term future of the universe? The scientific program will consist of 2.5 days of workshop activities on these questions, including plenary talks and panel discussions on key topics. In addition, we expect to nationally webcast some or all of the conference, and NPR's Science Friday will broadcast a special one hour segment associated with the conference. Details of the scientific program will be provided in subsequent bulletins. This conference is being generously supported by the Kavli Foundation, Case Western Reserve University, and several other sponsoring organizations. ========================================================================== REGISTRATION Participation in the conference is by invitation only. Due to the intensive nature of the program, attendance will be strictly limited to 60 invited participants including leading observers, experimentalists, and theorists in the field. Additionally, the conference will invite up to 20 of the most promising graduate students and post-docs from around the world to attend the meeting. Nominations for student or post-doc invitations can be completed online at: http://www.phys.cwru.edu/cgi-bin/cercafellow Local costs for all invited participants, including costs for conference meals, lodging, and social program activities will be covered by the conference and its sponsors. Support for travel will available to some participants and to all invited students and post-docs. ========================================================================== CONFERENCE LOCATION: The Kavli-CERCA Conference on the Future of Cosmology will be held on the campus of Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. All scientific sessions will be held in University Circle. CWRU is located in the University Circle neighborhood on Cleveland's east side. Neighboring institutions include the Cleveland Botanical Gardens, Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Cleveland Natural History Museum. ========================================================================== PUBLIC LECTURES: As part of the celebration of this inaugural conference of CERCA, there will be two special public lectures. The first will be given by Steven Weinberg on Thursday October 9th. The second will be given by Stephen Hawking on Monday, October 13th. ========================================================================== LODGING AND TRANSPORTATION: All arrangements for lodging accommodations will be made directly by the organizers on behalf of the invited participants. Most participants will be lodged at the Glidden House Inn located on North Quad of Case Western Reserve University. The Glidden House comprises the original mansion of the Glidden family (Glidden paints) and additions. This facility provides some of the most comfortable and charming lodging in Cleveland and is extremely convenient to CWRU. The address of Glidden House is 1901 Ford Drive (University Circle) Cleveland OH 44106, telephone 216-231-8900, and web page: http://www.gliddenhouse.com CERCA conference organizers will also provide arrangements for ground travel between nearby Cleveland Hopkins Airport and the conference. Detailed directions for travelers to the conference site including directions and maps to campus and local hotels will be provided in future bulletins and will be available online via the conference web site. ========================================================================== SOCIAL PROGRAM: As part of the conference, a special social program, including meals and visits to local attractions, are being planned for invited participants and accompanying persons. Social venues under consideration include outings to the Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall, and an exclusive program at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (in downtown Cleveland) ========================================================================== ABOUT CERCA: This is the inaugural conference of the new Center for Education and Research in Cosmology and Astrophysics (CERCA) at CWRU. This center will develop resources to continue the world class experimental, observational and theoretical research programs in these areas at CWRU, while working in close partnership with the Shafran Planetarium at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and with other institutions to help develop first-rate popular programming to help disseminate information on cosmology and astrophysics to the public. ========================================================================== LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE: Lawrence Krauss (CERCA Director and conference chair) Dan Akerib Corbin Covault Chris Mihos John Ruhl Glenn Starkman Tanmay Vachaspati ========================================================================== EXTERNAL PARTICIPANT LIST (as of April 2003) Andy Albrecht David Gross Bernard Sadoulet Neta Bahcall Francis Halzen Joe Silk Barry C.
