All participants should check carefully the detailed conference program to determine times for talks and panels. Please check the schedule each morning and plan ahead if you will participate on a panel or talk. Standard A/V support that will be available for invited speakers will include an overhead "document projector" and a display cable for laptop presentations (e.g. PowerPoint). The document projector does not require "transparencies" -- in fact opaque printed sheets in color on regular paper display the best. Invited speakers who plan to make presentations using their own laptops are requested to test their laptops on the display system prior to the start of the morning scientific session. Presenters with incompatible laptop display drivers may be asked to transfer their talk to a local laptop instead. Invited speakers are also strongly encouraged to bring hard-copy backups so as to avoid delay in the case of display problems during the talk. Because of time constraints and the nature of panel discussions, panel members will have very restricted access to electronic display technology. Specifically, panelist will be asked to refrain from connecting their laptop to the display cable to show figures, as this would cause delays. Instead panelist will be encouraged to bring hardcopy of any figures they might wish to show and/or to to prepare figures in PowerPoint or PDF format for transfer to USB memory sticks. For most panels, panelists can anticipate access to at most two or three figures. Local organizers will provide memory sticks to panel moderators in advance of each panel so that electronic versions of figures can be collected in one place and displayed during the panel. Ultimately, access to display technologies during each panel will be controlled by the panel moderator. Any participant who anticipates any other kind of A/V support that not indicated here should contact the secretariat immediately at cerca@cwru.edu so that arrangements can be made in advance. ========================================================================== TRANSPORTATION AND DIRECTIONS TO HOTELS Most conference attendees will be lodged in one of three local hotels: -- Glidden House, 1901 Ford Drive, Cleveland, Ph: (216) 231-8900 -- Notre Maison, 2557 North Park Blvd., Cleveland Hts, Ph: (216) 932-8769 -- The Alcazar, 2450 Derbyshire Rd., Cleveland Hts, Ph: (216) 321-5400 Details about these hotels can found online at: http://www.phys.cwru.edu/accom.php Our conference secretariat will be in contact with a number of you regarding your transportation from the airport. The only conference function that is not within walking distance of the hotels is the event at Gwinn Estate. The general area, known as University Circle and Cedar Hill is pleasant for walking, and includes residential and student housing, campus building, cultural centers and museums. Weather for walking is expected to be somewhat cool -- jacket weather, 50's and 60's during the day, 30's and 40's in the evening. Walking directions, including maps and photos are available online at: http://www.phys.cwru.edu/events/kavli_cerca/directions.html Here we provide walking directions from each of the hotels to the main conference site at Strosacker Auditorium >> Directions from the Glidden House to Strosacker Auditorium: Glidden is at the intersection of Ford Drive, Juniper Drive, and East Blvd. Head west from Glidden and walk along scenic East Blvd., meeting Euclid Ave. at the Wade Lagoon. Cross Euclid (carefully), and see the Visitor Information Center. Come up through the parking lot, and straight ahead is the Case Quad. Rockefeller, the home of the physics department, is on the left, past the greenspace. Continue two buildings further until you are even with the large black modern sculpture. On your left is the entrance to Strosacker Auditorium. >> Directions from the Notre Maison to Strosacker Auditorium: Turn RIGHT out of Notre's oval driveway. Turn RIGHT at the next available right, which will come up quite soon after departing Notre Maison. Go through 2 stop signs, crossing W. St. James, and proceed down Grandview Ave. You will intersect with Cedar Road at the traffic light. If you are in a car, prepare to make a wide turn left onto Cedar Rd., then immediately get in the right-most lane. If you are walking, cross Cedar at the light and then continue left a short distance to the nearby intersection so as to cross Euclid Heights Blvd (a divided road). Turn left after you cross Euclid Heights Blvd, and walk down hill on Cedar so that you are on the sidewalk where there is a long stone wall on your right side. Head down the steep hill on Cedar. You know you are on Cedar because hanging above the street are colored indicator lights (green arrows and red X's) that tell drivers about appropriate lane use during rush hour. Then at the next light -- the first available right just before the RTA bus/train station, turn RIGHT, onto Murray Hill Road. Shortly ahead there will be a sort of fork in the road; stay LEFT. Go over a 'bridge', and turn LEFT (onto Adelbert) just past the stop sign. If you are driving, a second LEFT will land you at the visitor's entrance to the parking garage that you just passed. The first floor is for visitors. On foot from this point: continue down Adelbert another 100 yards or so past Adelbert Gymnasium on your right, until you are standing between the entrance to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital on your right (Horvitz Tower) and the Kent Hale Smith Engineering building (a striking turquoise glass and lavender granite structure) on your left. Head left toward the Kent Hale Smith building and the pass it on the right. On the other side of Kent you should see a the rear entrance to the Strosacker Auditorium, which is marked by a sign near a pale yellow door with a glass window. Go through the door, into the building, down the stairs, and then look for signs indicating the entrance to Strosacker Auditorium. >> Directions from the The Alcazar to Strosacker Auditorium: Exit Alcazar North to Euclid Heights Blvd (divided road). Turn LEFT at light onto Euclid Heights Blvd. and travel 3 blocks to large intersection. Go as straight as possible bearing right though the intersection down the steep hill -- you are now on Cedar Road. Continue following directions as described in the second paragraph for directions from Notre Maison immediately above. Here we also provide walking/driving directions to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History >> Directions by foot or car from Strosacker Auditorium to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH) On foot: start on the west facing side of Strosacker - (the side facing the quad) turn right and walk toward Euclid ave. Walk past the parking lot, and the visitor information booth. Carefully cross Euclid Avenue (there will be no crosswalk -- alternatively you can jog one block to the right here for a crosswalk). By car: drive from the visitor parking garage down Adelbert toward Severance Hall. Turn left onto Euclid Avenue and then quickly right onto East Blvd. Head down East Blvd. On your left should be Wade lagoon and on your right will be Severance Hall. Travel down East Blvd for a several long blocks, past the lagoon, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, Until you reach an intersection where the road on the left is Wade Oval, and the road on your right is E 108 Street. Take a left onto Wade Oval, and then quickly on your right is a parking lot. This is the parking lot for the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Turn right into this lot. The entrance to the museum is at the end the parking lot. ========================================================================== DINING AND MEALS: Invited conference participants will have most meals included as part of their conference package.
