Monday morning: Jan 13th: Updated instructions for registering clickers.
Dear Physics 122 Students:
(Jan 13, 9:35 AM)
First, let me apologize for the continued technical difficulties
with the clicker registration. The "email" scheme we introduced
last night ALMOST worked. The problem is that different students
use different email clients which are encoded in (slightly)
different ways (particularly problematic is the issue of
encoding line-feed characters). This makes it hard to
write a script that reliably grabs the quantities we
need with the given instructions.
So we will try one more time. I need to ask EVERYONE who wants
to register their clicker to follow these precise directions
EXACTLY which are now slightly modified. Even if you
already registered your clicker, please do this.
Thanks for your patience and understanding.
Note: please disregard all previous instructions on clicker registration.
We are once more "starting from scratch" here:
STEP 1: Compose an email that will be sent to corbin.covault@cwru.edu.
Important: you must compose a new email -- do NOT reply to
this email.
STEP 2: The Subject Header for your email should say exactly these
words and nothing else:
Physics 122 Clicker Registration Revised
STEP 3: Your email should contain exactly one line of plain text in
the following format with six words separated by spaces, no
punctuation:
SOLENOID LASTNAME FIRSTNAME NetID ClickerID QUANTUM
For example:
SOLENOID Covault Corbin cec8 2F9A99D6 QUANTUM
STEP 4: Send the email without attachments of any kind.
To be clear, then:
Do NOT just "reply" to this email. Your mail will have the wrong
header and may be filled with extra "stuff" that typically get's
relayed in reply email.
Double check to make sure that the "subject header" is exactly as
indicated. This is the only way I can grab and sort 220 emails.
Your email should have only one single line of text, and that line
should have six words separated by spaces. No punctuation. No
extraneous characters. The first word should be SOLENOID. The
last word should be QUANTUM, exactly as shown. I will use these
two words in my script to be sure that I have "grabbed" the
correct part of your message.
If you have more than one single last and first name, please use just
one last and one first name and use the names as they would appear on
your course registration information. Do not include initials, etc.
Do not stick any extra spaces in either name. Please be very sure to
include your LAST names as the FIRST entry and not the other way
around.
For NetID we are looking for the "code" that identifies you to SIS,
usually something with three letters and a number like abc123. Also,
do NOT append "@case.edu" or anything like this.
For ClickerID we are looking for a code on the back of your clicker.
For the green "cricket" RF transmitters, the code is 8 "hex digits".
For the older PRS clickers, the code is anywhere from two to six digits.
Note also that if you already registered your clicker on the web page
you will need to RE-register your clicker by email as instructed here.
Please follow these directions exactly. Otherwise, I will not be
able to include your clicker in the registration list.
Please try to have your clicker registered by Friday. On Friday
morning I will send a confirming email to all students who have
successfully registered their clickers by then.
Let's try this ONE MORE TIME!
Thanks,
-Corbin Covault
